What Will Freeze First?

I found this idea for a fun science project. It seemed like it would be really simple to do, and it was. It was probably our easiest science activity so far.

All we had to do was get an empty ice cube tray and a few different liquids from the kitchen. The plan was to see which of them would freeze first.

Love Bug wanted to use 12 different things. (I’d originally planned on 6 or 8.) So he helped me pick out some things from the freeze, and we filled up our ice cube tray.

Then we talked about what he thought would freeze first. He picked ketchup “because we eat it with fries.” After the first few, he was just going in order around the ice cube tray.

We put them in the freezer and checked on them a few times. I was really surprised by how quickly the mustard and tartar sauce froze. The chocolate syrup was by far the last one. The ketchup came in next to last. They were the only two that weren’t frozen the next morning.
